Biocides are products used to protect people and animals, preserve goods, stop pests, and control viruses, bacteria and fungi through chemical or biological actions. They are regulated by the UK and EU governments under the ‘Biocidal Products Regulation (BPR)’.
The BPR has taken 30 years to impact the cleaning/hygiene products industry but it’s going to hit in the next 12 to 24 months. Enormous regulatory change is on the way for disinfectants, specifically those containing Benzalkonium Chloride (BKC) and Didecyldimethylammonium Chloride (DDAC), which will lead to a significant shake up in the industry.
Under the BPR, government authorisation will be required for disinfectant and sanitising products placed on the UK and/or EU markets. Therefore, in simple terms if the product is not authorised then the product cannot be sold.
The new updates to the EU BPR, regarding BKC and DDAC will mean that many products will disappear from the market, claims on products will become far more restricted and the cheaper, more dubious suppliers of low-grade disinfectants will disappear.
However, what it does mean is that the products that survive will be guaranteed to do exactly what they say on the tin.
What are Cleenol doing to help?
Cleenol has been working on a range of new hard surface disinfection products, which we will be launching soon. These products will be supported through the EU BPR as well as the GB BPR when it comes into effect, to ensure continuity in our products for the future.
Some of these products include two new additions to our super concentrates range - Evolution, along with a brand-new range of high-level disinfectants - Steritec.
