  • World Toilet Day – 19 November 2022 – Making the Invisible Visible

World Toilet Day is on 19th November. Held on the same date each year, and organised by UN Water, it has been a globally observed event since 2013. The purpose of World Toilet Day is to ‘celebrate toilets’ but also to raise awareness of the billions of people who don’t have access to proper sanitation. The United Nations’ (UN) Sustainable Development Goal 6.2 (SDG 6.2) aims to ensure safe toilets for everyone by 2030, yet today around 3.6 billion people still live with poor quality toilets. This not only poses a threat to health and contributes to the spread of disease, it also pollutes the environment, spreading human waste to our rivers, lakes and soil, and our groundwater. The title of this year’s World Toilet Day is ‘Making the Invisible Visible’ with a focus on the impact of poor sanitation on groundwater. Groundwater accounts for approximately 99% of freshwater on our planet and is vital to human survival. It supports our supplies of drinking water, together with sanitation systems, agriculture, industry and our ecosystems. The World Health Organization reports that at least two billion people drink from water sources contaminated with faeces and that every day more than 800 children under five years of age die from diarrhoea-related illness linked to unsafe drinking water. UN Water is therefore calling on us all to join the conversation and do more to achieve SDG 6.2 and prevent the global sanitation crisis we are currently facing. Keeping sanitation clean and kind to the environment The quality and accessibility of sanitation systems is important but so too is having access to good hygiene and cleanliness practices. Cleaning and hygiene products are crucial to ensure sanitation spaces are kept clean and safe, such as handwashes  and sanitisers to support good personal hygiene. Yet, as we increase our use of these products, we also risk harming the environment with chemicals and toxins. That’s why we developed our edencleen range, which includes high-performing solutions for around 80% of all cleaning needs, limiting any harmful impact on the environment. Our edencleen range is designed for sustainable hygiene the right way and includes toilet cleaner gel, washroom cleaner, drain maintainer, floor cleaner and urinal cleaner. Find out more about our range of edencleen products. Contact our team today, sales@cleenol.co.uk.

  • Watch Out for the Small Print

How to Read a Chemical Label Labels are the main way of communicating the hazards or risks posed by a substance or mixture. The labels, along with Safety Data Sheets (SDS), enable users to safely use and store these products for everyday use. In times where every penny counts, we might often get sold a story about a product that seems too good to be true. There are certain elements that are required on all labels as set out by the ‘Retained CLP Regulations (EU) No. 1272/2008 as amended for Great Britain’, now known as GB CLP (https://www.hse.gov.uk/chemical-classification/legal/clp-regulation.htm). To find out more about what to look out for when looking at a chemical label and to ensure that you don't fall fowl of unscrupulous manufacturers or merchants, follow the link here to see the full article.

  • Winter's bugs - Norovirus

Norovirus causes diarrhoea and vomiting and is one of the most common stomach bugs in the UK. It's also called the 'winter vomiting bug' because it's more common in winter, although you can catch it at any time of the year. Norovirus can be very unpleasant but usually clears up by itself in a few days. Symptoms of norovirus: ▪ suddenly feeling sick ▪ projectile vomiting ▪ watery diarrhoea Some people also have a slight fever, headaches, painful stomach cramps and aching limbs. How is norovirus spread? Norovirus spreads very easily in public places such as hospitals, nursing homes and schools. You can catch it if small particles of vomit or stools (poo) from an infected person get into your mouth through: ▪ close contact with someone with norovirus who may breathe out small particles of the virus that you then inhale.▪ touching contaminated surfaces or objects, as the virus can survive outside the body for several days.▪ eating contaminated food, which can happen if an infected person doesn't wash their hands before preparing or handling food. Preventing norovirus It's not always possible to avoid getting norovirus but, following the advice below can help stop the virus spreading. You should: ▪ stay off work or school until at least 48 hours after the norovirus symptoms have stopped. ▪ avoid visiting anyone in hospital during this time. ▪ wash your hands frequently and thoroughly with soap and water particularly after using the toilet and before preparing or handling food. ▪ be aware alcohol-based hand gels don't kill the virus. Maintain basic hygiene and cleaning to help stop the spread of norovirus by: ▪ disinfecting any surfaces or objects that could be contaminated, using a 0.1% bleach-based household cleaning solution (1000 ppm available chlorine). ▪ washing any items of clothing or bedding that could have become contaminated separately on a hot wash (60 °C) to ensure the virus is killed. ▪ not sharing towels and flannels. ▪ flushing any poo or vomit in the toilet and cleaning the surrounding area with a bleach-based household cleaner. ▪ avoiding eating raw, unwashed food. ▪ only eating oysters from a reliable source as they can carry norovirus. Cleenol's Sanitizing Tablets (062534/6 – 6 x 180 tabs) and High Power Sanitizing Tablets (0625CHL/6 – 6 x 200 tabs) provide a simple, cost-effective solution for disinfection of areas where people affected with norovirus have been. Including cleaning of touch points and areas that may have been contaminated with vomit or other body matter. Both the Sanitizing Tabs and High Power Sanitizing Tablets are based on a dry chlorine donor – Sodium Dichloroisocyanurate (NaDCC or Troclosene Sodium). This results in a safer, highly convenient and more accurate alternative to traditional liquid hypochlorite bleach. These tablets dissolve quickly with an effervescent action, giving a ready to use chlorine-based solution in under 5 minutes. The main differences between these two products are the size of the tablet and the amount of active ingredient contained within the product: ▪ Sanitizing Tablets = 1.1g (0.5g NaDCC) ▪ High Power Sanitizing Tablets = 3.25g (1.7g NaDCC) For disinfecting areas against Norovirus, a 0.1% solution of bleach is recommended. This means that there are 1000 parts per million (ppm) available chlorine molecules in the solution. Traditional bleach-based cleaners can be hard to accurately dilute to the correct concentration, as the dilution rates will vary depending on the strength of the initial product. However, for High Power Sanitizing Tablets it is very simple to dose to 1000 ppm: Dose Rate for 1000 ppm = 1 High Power Sanitizing Tablet per Litre of clean water Below are a few examples of dose rates to give a concentration of 1000 ppm: Sanitizing Tablets, are similarly easy to dose to 1000 ppm, simply requiring a large dose rate for an equivalent volume: For additional dose rates and alternative uses, please see the Product Use Guides for each product.

  • Unite for Universal Hand Hygiene - Global Handwashing Day 15th October

Unite for Universal Hand Hygiene - Global Handwashing Day 15th October Global Handwashing Day is on the 15th October. Organised by the Global Handwashing Partnership, the purpose of Global Handwashing Day is to raise awareness about the importance of handwashing to prevent the spread of disease and ultimately save lives. It’s also “an opportunity to design, test, and replicate creative ways to encourage people to wash their hands at critical times”. The theme of this year’s Global Handwashing Day is “Unite for Universal Handwashing”. According to the WHO and UNICEF, we need to quadruple the rates of progress in hand hygiene, to be able to achieve hygiene efforts set out in the Sustainable Development Goals. So, we can do more if we unite and do things together. Why handwashing is so important Good hand hygiene plays a key role in reducing the spread of a range of diseases including diarrheal, respiratory and outbreak-related pathogens such as cholera, Ebola, SARS, hepatitis E and of course COVID-19. But its importance extends beyond simply preventing disease outbreaks alone. By reducing the spread of infectious diseases, we also reduce school and work absenteeism and help to protect front-line workers. Effective hand hygiene Thorough handwashing with soap and water is the most effective way to ensure good hand hygiene, but the use of hand santisers is a helpful alternative where access to water is not possible. We saw from the COVID-19 pandemic how a concerted effort for thorough handwashing could help prevent the spread of the virus, but also the availability of hand santisers in many places where we might not have seen them pre-pandemic. And while the worst of the COVID-19 pandemic may be over, we may yet see a resurgence in cases and many other diseases are also here to stay, so it is important to make sure that good hand hygiene remains a priority. While there are everyday occasions when you should wash your hands such as before preparing food and eating, tending to a wound, after handling raw food, using the toilet or touching animals, we learned from the pandemic that more frequent handwashing or sanitising is important to prevent the transmission of viruses. But as we do, we also need to be careful not to overuse chemicals that may be harmful or cause skin irritation. Hand hygiene products that are kind on skin At Cleenol, we understand the importance of practicing good hygiene with frequent handwashing, which is why we have created a range of products that can be used regularly without harming or irritating the skin. Our Senses hand wash is designed for frequent use and is available in three scents – Rose Lily, Peach, and Green Apple. Or if you are looking for a more luxurious range, try our Ast & Greaves products including our carefully balanced, lightly perfumed hand washes, which are available in Jasmine & Apple Blossom and Black Pepper & Ginseng. We also provide a range of hand sanitisers including alcohol and non-alcohol sanitising gels and sprays. Our 70% Alcohol Sanitising Gel or Spray, kills 99.99% of viruses and 99.999% of bacteria but if you’re looking for a hand sanitiser designed for frequent use that is kind on the hands, then try our Senses Alcohol-Free Hand Sanitiser. It doesn’t dry as fast as an alcohol-based sanitiser, meaning you need to rub your hands together for longer, which provides better coverage and a more durable resistance on your hands. But if you are unsure as to which hand sanitiser is most effective to suit your needs then have a read of one of our previous posts, which tells you all you need to know. • Hospice Care Week

This week is dedicated to Hospice Care and Cleenol is proud to have been supporting Katharine House Hospice almost since its inception. About Katharine House Hospice Katharine House Hospice was officially opened by HRH The Princess of Wales in October 1991. Since then the hospice in Adderbury, near Banbury, has met the emotional, physical and medical needs of thousands of people affected by life-limiting illnesses. Local girl Katharine Gadsby was aged only 20 when her life was cruelly cut short by cancer. She had told her father, Neil, that she did not want to die in a hospital bed so she spent her last days at home as no other option was available. Her untimely death set her father and friends on a six-year journey to raise sufficient funds to build a place that cares for people during their toughest times. Today, care at the ten-bed hospice is led by consultants in palliative medicine and specialist nurses, while the hospice also offers a range of day services and care in the community. https://www.khh.org.uk/ Cleenol’s strong ties to hospice Cleenol’s association with Katharine House Hospice dates back to its foundation. The headmaster at Katharine Gadsby’s school was Ken Greaves, grandfather of current MD of Cleenol Group, Sam Greaves. Ken, a long-time friend of Neil Gadsby, read at Katharine’s funeral and also assisted Neil in the acquisition of the land on which the hospice was built. Sam’s father, Richard Greaves, and predecessor as Cleenol’s MD, was a trustee for over 15 years, and took over as chairman of the hospice when Neil retired. Over the last eight years Cleenol has been providing the hospice with a variety of cleaning products – all free of charge – and saving it £5,000 a year. The products include toilet maintainers and descalers, cream cleaners, sanitisers, wax free polishes and lift spray cleaners with bactericides. Also, since 2014, Cleenol has donated over £20,000 to the hospice through employee fundraising and various sponsorship activities. These have included midnight walks, Christmas raffles, sponsorship of Christmas cards, ‘Bring a £1 to Work Day’, collection boxes placed in Cleenol’s reception, ‘Care for A Cuppa’, an accumulator challenge, a gala dinner held at nearby Blenheim Palace, sponsorship of newsletters and donated profits from sales of scrap metal and office products. Fundraising key to hospice’s future Trevor Johnson, CEO at Katharine House Hospice said: “We still enjoy working closely together as a partnership, with Cleenol also sponsoring our hospice projects and through employee fundraising. We are very much looking forward to the partnership growing and celebrating Cleenol’s 75th anniversary next year. “The hospice simply would not exist without the support from our local businesses, like Cleenol. Indeed, Cleenol provide more than just support, they are a partnership with the hospice providing gifts in kind, sponsorship and fundraising. “They are a company that share the same values as the hospice which is why we work so well together and we are proud to be a partnership with them. “Cleenol as a business are very passionate and committed to supporting the local community and by supporting the community, they, in turn, support both their staff and clients”. This support is integral to who Cleenol is as a company and to our philosophy as a business, supporting the local community and helping provide for a cleaner, safer world.

  • National Hygiene Week - Let’s put an end to hygiene poverty

National Hygiene Week runs from 3rd to 9th October this year. Organised by The Hygiene Bank, the purpose of National Hygiene Week is to raise awareness about hygiene poverty and encourage individuals and organisations around the UK to get involved, volunteer or donate money or products to support the cause. What is hygiene poverty? The Hygiene Bank uses the term hygiene poverty to describe those who are unable to afford vital hygiene and personal grooming products because they need to spend their money on other life essentials such as food, heating or rent. Over a third of people living in the UK are classed as living in poverty and over a half of 18 to 24 year olds have had to go without essential hygiene products or cut down on usage because they can’t afford them. This means people are being forced to choose between keeping warm and putting food on the table and doing everyday activities a lot of us take for granted such as cleaning, washing and dental hygiene. The Hygiene Bank is working to change this Driven by the belief that basic hygiene is not a privilege, The Hygiene Bank aims to fulfil its vision that ‘one day everyone in the UK will have access to essential hygiene products’. National Hygiene Week plays a big part in this. Why we’re supporting National Hygiene Week At Cleenol, we’re committed to creating a cleaner, safer world and we provide a range of high-quality cleaning, hygiene and sanitising products to businesses and organisations. Because we understand the importance of good hygiene and cleanliness to keep people and the environment safe, we’re proud to be associated with The Hygiene Bank and support their aims to end hygiene poverty and enable everyone in the UK to access these essential products. How can I get involved? There are several ways to get involved. You can choose to volunteer by setting up a hygiene bank in your area or offering your skills to help support The Hygiene Bank’s campaign. Alternatively if you’re a retailer, service provider or public service, you can help by hosting a collection box. The Hygiene Bank also relies on individuals, organisations, businesses and institutions to support the cause by being a collector of these vital supplies to enable The Hygiene Bank to get them to the people who so desperately need them. And the Hygiene Bank is always on the lookout for people to help with fundraising activities and for corporate support from organisations and businesses.

  • Is Hand Hygiene Dead?

Is hand hygiene still a priority as we move beyond the worst of the pandemic? The pandemic changed our behaviour, with governments around the globe encouraging citizens to take steps to prevent the spread of the virus. Mask-wearing became mandatory, we were forced to socially distance or isolate, and take extra measures around hygiene and sanitisation to protect ourselves and the most vulnerable in our communities. As we emerge from the worst of the pandemic, we are finally able to enjoy a level of normality and relax a little. But the virus hasn’t completely disappeared and we may yet face future spikes in case numbers. So, while we may breathe a sigh of relief hoping that the worst of it is over, are we remembering the things we can do to prevent any further spread of Covid-19, or any future virus spreading in the way Covid-19 did? A YouGov behaviour changes tracker, shows a clear trend of relaxation in people’s attitude towards the virus. It has been charting people’s approach towards improving personal hygiene (such as hand washing and using sanitiser) in relation to Covid-19 since February 2020, when the virus started spreading around the world. It records a significant downward trend in participants actively improving their personal hygiene, most prominently in Europe and the Americas. For example, in the UK, the tracker shows us that 77% of participants were taking measures to improve hygiene in April 2020, whereas in July 2022, this has fallen to just 29% and in the US a reduction from 69% down to 40%. Hand wash, creams and sanitisers are important to limit the transmission of, not just Covid-19, but other illnesses and viruses as well, to keep ourselves safe from bacteria and germs. Our extensive range of hand hygiene products will help you, your employees, customers, and clients to do that. Our Senses hand wash is designed for frequent use. It can be used to refill a wall-mounted soap dispenser and is available in three scents – Rose Lily, Peach, and Green Apple. Or if you are looking for a more luxurious range, try our Ast & Greaves products. Our carefully balanced, lightly perfumed hand washes are available in Jasmine & Apple Blossom and Black Pepper & Ginseng. We also provide a range of hand sanitiser products. Our 70% Alcohol Hand Sanitizing Gel or Spray, kill 99.99% of viruses and 99.999% of bacteria. Or if you are looking for a sanitiser that is kinder on the hands, try our Senses Alcohol-Free Hand Sanitizer designed for frequent use. It dries more slowly than alcohol-based sanitisers meaning you get better coverage (you rub your hands together for longer) with a more durable resistance on your skin. • Cleenol Sponsors Cleanology's Hygiene Bank Fundraiser

Cleenol is delighted to be one of the key sponsors supporting Cleanology's initiative, bringing some of the biggest names in the cleaning and FM industry together to support the launch of a spectacular new annual fundraising event in aid of The Hygiene Bank. In September 2021, Cleanology held its first charity event which raised over £14,000 for The Hygiene Bank, a national charity that alleviates poverty by providing hygiene products to those in need. Due to the enormous success of that event, the wide publicity generated, and the amount of money raised through the raffle and auction, CEO of Cleanology, Dominic Ponniah is looking to make a bigger impact this year and will be hosting a higher profile networking event aimed at the cleaning and FM sectors to raise even more awareness and funds for The Hygiene Bank. The event has been backed by 6 of the biggest names in the industry: Bridge Recruitment, Cleenol Group, Darwin Clayton, Liberty Hygiene, Truvox International and Zep will join Cleanology to welcome industry representatives to the Private Dining Room of the prestigious Ivy Restaurant in central London on 27 September 2022, where guests will enjoy networking, drinks & canapes, a lively auction and raffle. Cleanology CEO Dominic Ponniah said: “Last year was our first fundraising event, and we managed to raise a staggering £14,000. This year, with these fantastic sponsors on board, we plan to make an even greater impact. I am incredibly grateful to all our sponsors for getting behind this important cause.” Tom Poynter, UK Chairman of The Hygiene Bank, said "We are thrilled to be working with Cleanology again to raise vital funds to tackle hygiene poverty. With the cost-of-living crisis pushing more of us to make increasingly tough decisions, these partnerships with brands and corporates are more important than ever. Cleanology champions this collaborative approach to tackling hygiene poverty, enabling and empowering brands and corporates of all sizes to make a real difference to communities throughout the UK." Ponniah welcomed the support of the sponsors, saying: “This commitment brings valuable extra funds, but we are also excited to be able to work collaboratively to tackle such an important issue. Figures show that one in three people have to go without hygiene essentials and, sadly, as the cost of living rises, we can only expect to see this number increase. The Hygiene Bank is really on the front line in supporting people through real crisis, and we welcome any companies that would like to join us to fight hygiene poverty.” Tickets are £38 +VAT each and available on Eventbrite, with all profits donated to The Hygiene Bank: https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/383940886527

  • Celebrating World Food Safety Day

Food safety affects everyone without exception. From production to packaging and transportation to retail, cooks and chefs all the way to the end consumer, no-one is untouched by the need to uphold good food safety standards. Indeed every single one of us is a consumer so we all have an interest in the ensuring good levels of food hygiene. In 2018, the World Health Organization launched Food Safety Day which is held each year on 7th June to raise awareness of food safety and to ‘inspire action to help prevent, detect and manage foodborne risks’[1]. What are the risks around poor food safety? Poor food safety can result in foodborne diseases, which can range from mild illness, to severe disease and even death. Globally, one in every ten people fall ill from contaminated food each year[2], but this, for the most part, is preventable. The quality and state of food itself is of course important to prevent foodborne diseases because food must be in a state that is fit to be eaten in the first place. But it goes further than that. Proper hygiene and safety measures must also be upheld at every stage of the supply chain. So it’s not just about the food itself. It’s also about how it’s stored, transported, cooked and prepared. How, with what, and by who. The hygiene of the surfaces, prepping and cooking equipment, and even people the food comes into contact with, at whatever stage of the process, is also essential. Helping to uphold food safety best practice There’s an easy and practical way to ensure food safety best practice is upheld. That is, by implementing and adhering to an effective cleaning and hygiene regime, and by using the right products to support this. Since 1948, Cleenol has been a leading provider of hygiene and cleaning products. As our business has evolved, so have our products. We have a comprehensive range of cleaning products, developed specifically to help our customers achieve the optimum level of cleanliness and hygiene, including for the food and beverage sector. Our Virabact range for example, includes antiviral and antibacterial multi-surface cleaners, ready-to-use surface cleaners and sanitisers, as well as concentrated surface cleaners and sanitisers. We also have an extensive range of hand sanitisers, antibacterial foam soaps, ice machine cleaning kits, alcohol wipes and non-rinse floor degreasers. And our range of hand wash products, is perfect for kitchens and washrooms. If you’d like to find out more, contact our team today.
